Modern Flush Toilets and Their Electronics
For many of us, November unofficially marks the beginning of the holiday season, bringing along an endless amount of fall-themed recipes and food-centered gatherings. History of the Flush Toilet
Ancient civilizations had their own methods of waste removal, with societies such as the Romans and Egyptians developing toilets and plumbing with running water all covered by dry-clay bricks. However, it wasn’t until 1596 when the godson of Queen Elizabeth I created the first flushable toilet. Sir John Harington’s invention consisted of a combination of levers and weights that, when prompted, opened a valve and poured water from an upstairs cistern.
The design and operation of the flush toilet continued to progress for more than 200 years. Flush toilets were included on ships by the late 1700’s, and the 1848 Public Health Act required every new house in the UK to have some version of a flush toilet.
