Tis the Season for Flushing

November 22, 2021

There’s a Keystone in every great invention.

Modern Flush Toilets and Their Electronics

For many of us, November unofficially marks the beginning of the holiday season, bringing along an endless amount of fall-themed recipes and food-centered gatherings. Thanksgiving meals will truly test the limits of ovens, stovetops, and microwaves country-wide, but a certain “seat” outside of the kitchen will definitely rival for the title of “most-used appliance.”

Over time, the toilet has evolved into a throne of sanctity. As innovations have propelled bathrooms from simple holes in the ground to modern works of art, electronics have gone a step further in putting smart toilets and bathrooms at the top of wish lists.

History of the Flush Toilet

Ancient civilizations had their own methods of waste removal, with societies such as the Romans and Egyptians developing toilets and plumbing with running water all covered by dry-clay bricks. However, it wasn’t until 1596 when the godson of Queen Elizabeth I created the first flushable toilet. Sir John Harington’s invention consisted of a combination of levers and weights that, when prompted, opened a valve and poured water from an upstairs cistern.

The design and operation of the flush toilet continued to progress for more than 200 years. Flush toilets were included on ships by the late 1700’s, and the 1848 Public Health Act required every new house in the UK to have some version of a flush toilet.

Convenience and Efficiency with Electronics

While the traditional flush toilet is still very much the standard in present-day households, the inclusion of electronics in the bathroom provides homeowners all the convenience, indication and innovation they can imagine. Battery-powered smart toilets can provide automated services such as heated seats and adjustable seat positioning, while also powering attached bidets for the ultimate cleaning experience. LED nightlights provide users with guidance at night, and Bluetooth-enabled remotes and sensors offer flushing and preference control without having to touch a toilet.

The inclusion of electronics in toilets and bathrooms supply an impressive amount of convenience, but the efficiency gained is also something to be marveled. Hands-free cleaning and automatic flushing have a direct effect on a household’s overall toilet paper usage and water consumption, while hands-free flushing and remote-control operation eliminate physical touchpoints for germs and bacteria. These electronic components, and the features they help deliver aren’t just for convenience and luxury, but increasing hygiene as well.

Keystone Electronics’ products such as Battery Clips, Contacts & Holders and LED Spacers & Lens Caps  and  Metal Key-Pad Dome Switches can play a contributing role in making your toilet and bathroom clever, clean, and convenient.
