Water Purification and Water in Space

As of this fall, NASA has confirmed that water currently flows, on a seasonal basis, on Mars.
The Red Planet has been subject to endless study and exploration as scientists have sought the elixir of life: liquid water. And sure enough, the mysterious streaks they’ve watched — recurring slope lineae (RSL) — appearing to ebb and flow over time, have been confirmed with convincing science to be flowing water.
Briny and mineral-rich, the flows intensify during warm seasons (for Mars, above minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit) and fade in cooler seasons. The hydrated salts and minerals in the water lower its freezing point, just like salt on Earth’s roads helps to melt ice.
What is water purification?
Just like water on Mars, Earth’s water is often laden with minerals, salts, and other materials that make it less than friendly for human consumption.
In order to make water safe, healthy, and tasty to drink, engineers have developed a vast array of systems over time. Large scale water purification affects entire cities, removing undesirable chemicals, biological contaminants, suspended solids, and gases from large water supplies.
Water purification can also suit specific purposes — medical, pharmacological, chemical, and industrial applications all demand specially filtered or treated water in certain applications. Slow sand filters, biologically active carbon, flocculation, chlorination, and ultraviolet light all purify water in different ways for different purposes.
Minerals like those on Mars are just one of the elements that water purification systems remove — without them, all manner of parasites, bacteria, algae, viruses, and fungi naturally thrive in wet environments. Just like humans, water is their life source.
